Call to Arms – Real talk Rap Battle event

April 26, 2011 — 2 Comments

If you’ve never heard of Real Talk Battle League make sure to check that out.

Real Talk Battle League is MC battles in a written format founded in Brisbane, Australia, September, 2009.

If your not familiar with battle rap then I guess the Fresh Coast Documentary is probably a good introduction to how things are in the 21st Century. The internet has really changed the game, there’s leagues all over the world, some people would probably say the scene is saturated these days. Its beyond the scope of this post to summarise all that. So I’ll just make the point that Real Talk Battle League is a big deal in the Australian scene.

So I’ve been following this stuff for a minute and have wanted to go to an event for a while, I guess a combination of a long break from work and confidence in my ability as a photographer led me to contact Dwizofoz and offer to photograph the Call to Arms event. With only a days notice he was nice enough to give me a shot, I appreciated not having to jump through hoops.

Photographing people inside a club reminded me of those guys you see in nightclubs getting party shots. I usually prefer to blend in and become unnoticeable but with this big white flash going off every time I took a picture that was pretty much impossible. I was a little worried the flash would piss people off or distract them but it seems to have been ok. With my obvious presence in consideration I still managed to capture some authentic moments. I also went with black and white which I think was a good decision.

In hindsight I really should have gotten photos of more people but you have to start somewhere so maybe if I get another chance I will do better. I wont bore people with my analysis of various challenges I faced. I would just like to thank them all for a great night, I haven’t laughed that hard in a while, it was thoroughly entertaining. If you like hip hop and that sort of thing then you have to check out these artists and what they do and not just on the internet, its pretty amazing.

Here’s some of the photos followed by some links where you can learn more about the people in them. (click to enlarge)

If you want to learn more about whos in the photos then probably visit the Call to Arms Preview Apr 24 album on facebook and look at the tags, comment etc. Here’s the Real Talk Battle League facebook page.

If you want to look at the higher quality version then visit the Sunday 24 Call to Arms photos on my gallery. If you are going to take a copy of any of the photos then take it from my gallery because facebook lowers the quality when you upload there.

To be honest the photography is nice and perhaps extends the event for a while and gives a nice memoir for the participants but the real action is in the videos so dont forget to check out Real Talk Battle League. I also recorded some video but I might publish it after the official videos come out so stay tuned.
